JORDAN posted this tip yesterday and here’s the reasoning.
He says: The Champions League qualifiers are at their final stage and my game picked sees Switzerland’s Young Boys host Germany’s Monchengladbach.
I followed the Germans’ results most weeks last season and while they were a force at home they struggled on the road, conceding the second most amount of goals in the Bundesliga.
They’ve had a lengthy pre-season but this will be their first competitive fixture in three months. They are favourites to qualify and while that’s probably realistic the Swiss will give them a tough time, especially at home on their plastic pitch where they are dominant in their domestic league.
Young Boys will be desperate to qualify for their first Champions League group stage and despite the opposition they’ll be right up for it after knocking out Ukrainian giants Shahktar Donetsk in the previous round. They struggled on the artificial turf in a 2-0 loss despite having the better share of stats on paper.
Young Boys already have seven games under their belts this season and will be much more match sharp but Monchengladbach will pose a threat with the likes of Raffael, Stindl, Hazard (Eden’s younger brother) and Hermann.
The Swiss have played only five games at home in their history of the Champions League era and until their clean sheet against Shahktar they had conceded two or more in the previous four against Monaco, Spurs, Fenerbahce and Crvena Zvezda. Despite conceding they have scored in every Champions League home game and the last time they failed to score at home was the September 20, 2015 in a Europa League game against Qarabag.
Monchengladbach had a very tough ask last season with Manchester City, Juventus and Sevilla in their group but still managed to pull out some decent performances with two draws against Juventus, a 4-2 win at home against Sevilla and even gave City a scare when they were leading 2-1 with 10 minutes to go in Manchester but crumbled with three late goals for City.
You might find goals right across the qualifiers tonight but knowing a little about these two teams it stuck out the most for me. Good luck if you follow.
